Nissan Showcases the Future of Intelligent Driving
Yokohama, Japan – Nissan has unveiled the next evolution of its driver-assistance technology, the next-generation ProPILOT, combining Wayve’s AI Driver software with next-generation LiDAR to create a more human-like, intelligent, and safer driving experience. The system is set to debut on select Nissan vehicles in Japan by fiscal year 2027 (FY27).
In demonstration tests held in downtown Tokyo, a fleet of Ariya-based electric prototype vehicles showcased the system’s ability to navigate complex traffic conditions — a significant step forward in Nissan’s mission to redefine safety and autonomous mobility.
Wayve AI Driver: Human-Like Perception and Reaction
At the heart of the new ProPILOT system lies Wayve’s embodied AI technology, an advanced form of artificial intelligence designed to perceive and understand environments like a human driver.
This AI analyzes real-time image data from 11 cameras, 5 radars, and a next-generation LiDAR sensor, enabling precise situational awareness and smooth driving through urban chaos.
What makes Wayve’s AI unique is its ability to:
- Anticipate movement — predicting what will happen next on the road.
- Learn and adapt — improving performance through experience, much like a human driver.
- React instantly — thanks to high-speed processing that ensures safety in real time.
Inspired by human cognition, this AI doesn’t just detect objects — it understands how entire driving scenes evolve, allowing it to make better, context-aware decisions.
Ground Truth Perception: Seeing Beyond the Human Eye
Nissan’s Ground Truth Perception technology, enhanced with next-generation LiDAR, provides unparalleled accuracy in detecting the vehicle’s surroundings.
Mounted on the roof, this LiDAR sensor maps the environment in 3D — identifying objects at greater distances, even during nighttime or high-speed driving.
This integration ensures superior awareness and safety, allowing the vehicle to handle complex environments like intersections, tight lanes, and merging traffic with confidence.
From ProPILOT 2.0 to a New Era of Assistance
Nissan’s journey with ProPILOT has evolved steadily:
- ProPILOT (2016): Single-lane highway assistance.
- ProPILOT 2.0: Multi-lane autonomous support with hands-off capabilities.
- Next-Generation ProPILOT: Urban adaptability using AI and LiDAR.
According to Eiichi Akashi, Nissan’s Chief Technology Officer,
“Our next-generation ProPILOT technology will deliver the sensation of a skilled human driver — adapting to complex traffic and providing true peace of mind.”
This leap represents Nissan’s ambition to make autonomous driving not just safer, but smarter and more natural.
Building a Safer and Smarter Mobility Future
The new ProPILOT project is part of Nissan’s broader mission to enable cleaner, safer, and more accessible mobility for all. By combining embodied AI and high-precision sensors, Nissan aims to lead the next decade of intelligent transportation.
The company plans to roll out this technology first in Japan by FY27, with potential expansion to global markets following successful implementation.
